Description

Mount Ascutney offers a unique experience for hang gliders, featuring a natural rock cliff that faces northwest. The site is rarely used but provides some opportunities for soaring and cross-country flights. The elevation is 2833 feet (863 meters) with an ideal wind direction of 330 degrees. It works best with northwest winds but can also handle calm to moderate north winds and light west winds. The launch area is a natural rock cliff where the rock drops away under both wings, allowing for a good flow of air. Pilots typically become airborne after just a couple of steps. The hike to the launch site is about 1/2 mile from the summit parking lot and can be challenging with gear. Follow the trail at the far northwest side of the parking lot, taking the first fork to the left, and continue until you reach a clearing and the launch. Key considerations include thermal turbulence and the potential for "ramp suck" in moderate to strong winds. The uneven rock surface can be difficult to climb without assistance, and the wire crew may struggle with footing on the north wing. Pilots should avoid launching from the wooden staging area to prevent wind shadow issues. A wire crew is recommended on all but the calmest days. Be mindful of hikers who frequent the scenic launch spot. Ensure spectators clear the rock and the area immediately below the launch before you approach with your glider.
