Conditions Optimales
Description
Haystack Butte in Oregon, USA, offers a unique paragliding experience with a vertical height of approximately 1,000 feet. This site is known for its steep hike-up and is suitable for soaring and mini cross-country flights. The butte features northwest and northeast facing slopes with a central spine at the northernmost part. Be cautious of rotors when flying in the lee of this spine.
The site is most beautiful in the spring when the area is green, although desert thermals are prevalent in the summer. Afternoon winds can pick up quickly, so it's advisable to watch the water on Haystack Reservoir for signs of increasing winds. Evening glass-off conditions can be spectacular, making it a great starting point for cross-country flights to other buttes like Cyrus, Pine Ridge, and Gray.
Access to the site is primarily through BLM National Grasslands, but some areas are on private land owned by Kenny Read of KD Bar Ranch. Historically, Kenny has been unfriendly to paragliders, but efforts are being made to improve this relationship. Cooperation from all pilots is essential to maintain access and potentially reduce the hike by driving through his land.
Before flying, contact the site liaison, Jake Jacobs, at 425-466-0954 or soaringredmond@outlook.com. It's crucial to get permission and any updates on site conditions.
Risk mitigation includes:
- Maximum wind speeds of 15 mph.
- Ideal wind direction is N-NW.
- Watch for barbed wire fences.
- Be aware of rotor potential off the north spine.
Camping is available along the shore of Haystack Reservoir. The butte is home to golden eagle nests, especially active before mid-June, and an elk herd and numerous deer. There is also an endangered plant species on the top of the butte, so limit your time walking around there.
