Description
Haldigrat, located in the Dallenwil region of Switzerland, is an excellent launch site for both paragliding and hang gliding. The site is well-known for its suitability for cross-country flights and has hosted numerous championships. The launch area is situated just below 2,000 meters and can be accessed via a combination of cable car rides and a short hike.
The launch site is oriented from east to west with steep meadows facing south, providing ideal conditions for thermal updrafts from early to late summer. However, caution is advised due to potential rotor turbulence. For the latest information on cable car operations, it is recommended to call 079/224`78`85 in advance, as service is not always guaranteed even in good weather.
The journey to the launch site takes approximately 40 minutes. Start by taking the cable car from Dallenwil to Niederrickenbach, followed by a 30-minute hike to the chairlift that leads directly to Haldigrat. The final approach to the launch site involves a short walk to a steep meadow.
The launch window is oriented southwest and is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. The elevation at the launch site is 1,990 meters. The area is also known for its excellent soaring conditions, typically found by turning right towards Gigi after takeoff.
Due to the significant elevation difference, long glide flights down to the valley are possible. However, pilots should be cautious of numerous transport and logging cables in the Engelberg Valley, especially around Oberrickenbach, which is about 3 km south of Haldigrat. Strong spring thermals from April to June can also pose challenges, particularly in lee-side conditions.
