Paragliding Grubigstein Marienbergbahn
Best Conditions
Optimal Wind Direction
Optimal Speed (kmh)
Description
Located opposite the Zugspitze, this site is frequently used by paragliders. It offers excellent soaring conditions and good potential for cross-country flights, including FAI triangles. There are multiple take-off options, with the main launch site situated near the summit station.
The Grubigstein is renowned as the most famous flying mountain in the Zugspitz Arena. Throughout your flight, you'll be accompanied by the majestic view of the Zugspitze.
Take-off is dependent on wind direction. The easiest launches are with east or north winds from the ski slopes. The south take-off is steep and technical, with limited space for a run-up, making it challenging for some pilots.
The region often experiences strong valley winds from the west. In such conditions, it's crucial to stay above the Grubigsteinbahn. Avoid full circles to prevent strong drift and opt for slow figure-eights instead. The wind is usually strong but not turbulent.
In east-northeast conditions, turbulence can occur above the power lines. There's significant lift near the landing zone, so it's advisable to lose altitude near the Grubigsteinbahn for a smoother descent.
Grubigstein is a hidden gem for paragliders, suitable for both summer and winter flights. The Langes mountain railways offer a special x-trem ticket for easy access.
