Located in Washington, USA, this paragliding site offers a launch altitude of 1351 meters with a height difference of 720 meters. It's a medium-difficulty site, regularly used for thermal soaring and has good potential for cross-country (XC) flights. The site is above average in terms of quality and experience.
The launch area is a clearing in the forest with enough space for one glider and is accessible via a 2WD road starting at coordinates N48.57777 W120.37091. The site appears to be unregulated, so it's important to use common sense and consult with locals before flying.
The landing zone (LZ) is conveniently located near the Mazama store with parking available on Chechaquo Ranch Rd. The launch site is just off forest service road NF-5225. It's recommended to drive past the launch site to a rocky viewpoint to check the wind direction. Avoid flying if there is a significant West wind; the site works best with South or Southeast winds. The launch itself is straightforward with a decent slope and a large windsock below.
To gain altitude, traverse back and forth in front of the launch between the viewpoint and just left of the launch. Be cautious not to go too far past the rocky viewpoint unless you have gained sufficient altitude, as the valley flow can end your flight prematurely. For new pilots, the trajectory to the LZ can be intimidating. If you find yourself getting below the launch, head directly to the LZ as there are no other landing options between the launch and the LZ.
A classic XC route from this site is to fly up to WA Pass (Liberty Bell) and back. For this route, aim to be at least 10,000 feet to cross the valley, though 11,000 or 12,000 feet is preferable. The valley flow is typically strong and flows East to West. Despite the large LZ, it can be missed, so be aware of backup LZs among the trees.
The launch is wide enough and not difficult, but the site can become rough due to winds, especially near the takeoff. Pilots should be confident in close proximity thermal scratching and prepared for bumpy conditions. The official landing zone is a large horse meadow, and while the owner is friendly towards paragliders, it's crucial to avoid spooking the horses. Midday landings can be challenging due to strong winds in the valley.
