Description
Located in the Grisons region of Switzerland, the paragliding site near Flims offers an exceptional experience for pilots. With a takeoff altitude of 2660 meters, this site is highly frequented and known for its excellent cross-country flying potential. The site record stands at 76.0 km, showcasing its capability for long-distance flights.
Flims is an outstanding winter flying area. However, pilots must maintain a minimum distance of 300 meters from the terrain when flying over and around the Flimserstein. The Cassonsbahn cable car should not be overflown towards Flimserstein unless there is sufficient clearance. Detailed information can be found at the ticket offices of the mountain railways and on the notice boards at the Cassonsbahn stations. It is crucial to adhere to flight area restrictions, especially those related to wildlife protection.
The takeoff area consists of grass with some rocky patches, so be cautious of your lines. In summer, strong thermal conditions can occur. Top landing in strong thermals is recommended only for experienced pilots; otherwise, the difficulty ranges from easy to moderate. In winter, there is a cable below the middle takeoff area from the mountain station. Starting from the far right (school takeoff area) poses no problem.
Flims offers a variety of takeoff options suitable for all seasons. Flights to Disentis and back are possible, and FAI triangles over 100 km are often flown. The site is well-suited for thermal flying in winter and autumn due to the high-altitude takeoff above the valley inversion. If Cassons is not flyable, you can head over to Crap Sogn Gion using the same day pass for the mountain railways. Cross-country flights towards Disentis are straightforward.
The takeoff window is influenced by the local wind system, with orientations to the southeast, south, and southwest. The difficulty level is medium, and the takeoff height is 2700 meters. The site is accessible via a cable car, and the coordinates are 9.261107, 46.880271. The hike to the takeoff area takes about 10 minutes from Flims with the Cassonsgrat cable car.
The landing area is about 100 meters to the right of the railway in Flims. The Flims-Foppa-Naraus chairlift passes by the landing area, which can be seen from above. The area is very open and offers clear visibility, making it suitable even for beginners. However, in winter, be aware of the cable below the Cassons takeoff area.
