Description

At an altitude of 2090 meters, this site is occasionally used for training and schooling, with possibilities for cross-country flights. It offers many beautiful and easy launch options. Flights in this region of Switzerland have recorded distances of up to 32.8 km and 7.6 km. Since there is no official launch site, pilots choose a suitable spot on the Fisetengrat based on vegetation and flight plans. Depending on your flight plan, you might need to take short hikes. Urnerboden, also known as 'Boden' or 'Ennetmärcht,' is the largest alp in Switzerland and a small settlement inhabited year-round. It is an 8-kilometer-long high valley surrounded by mountains nearly 3000 meters high, located east of the Klausen Pass. Although geographically on the Glarus side, it belongs to the canton of Uri and is part of the municipality of Spiringen. The Fisetengrat stretches north from the Fiseten Pass to the Chamerstock. The area is thermally active in the afternoon due to its western orientation. In the morning, mountain winds can be expected as thermals rise on the east side of the ridge and are drawn towards the Urnerboden alp. Flight Options: - A straightforward glide to Urnerboden, suitable for flight students and leisure pilots. You can start directly at the Fiseten Pass, where the terrain is ideal for launching. - Start further north and fly into Linthal. Depending on weather conditions, you may need to hike along the ridge from the Fiseten Pass towards Chamerstock. This could connect you to the Braunwald/Gummen flying area. - Fly over Urnerboden to the opposite side and try to catch thermals there. This should be achievable with almost any glider under moderate thermal conditions. - Wait for thermals to develop on the ridge or hike towards Chamerstock and start eastwards. If thermals are present, you could fly over Tödi or towards Elm. Alternatively, fly between Elm and Braunwald over the mountains towards Walensee. - Fly to Tierfehd and take the Kalkrittli cable car back up. If you have enough altitude, try flying to Brigels and continue on the Flims-Oberalp route. - Fly over the Klausen Pass into Schächental, Biel-Kinzig, Eggbergen, and Flüelen. Difficulty: The main challenge is the hidden and unmarked transport cables. Some dangerous cables are located northeast of Urnerboden (near the landing approach) and further towards Linthal/Braunwald, spanning the valley but not marked. Thermal flying is generally good here. In foggy conditions in Glarus or Schächental, flying at Fisetengrat is still possible. Soaring conditions are favorable with light bise or better NW wind. Cable Car: Fisetengratbahn from Urnerboden. There is a schedule, but you can also call the operator at the valley station. Pilot Meeting Point: Fiseten Pass, with a nice seating area and a fire pit offering a magnificent panorama.
