Description

At an elevation of 2133 meters with a height difference of approximately 1100 meters, this paragliding site is frequently used and highly recommended. It offers excellent thermal soaring conditions, particularly in the afternoon, and the potential for cross-country flights. The site features a 12 km ridge facing WSW-SW and requires a minimum P2 HPAC rating and a radio for communication. There is no official landing zone, but the Fernie school field is a long glide away and can be used. Access to the launch site involves a 40-minute shuttle ride in a 4WD vehicle; it's best to ask locals for assistance. For a visual experience of the flights, check out this [Vimeo video](https://vimeo.com/184038822) and this [Facebook post](https://www.facebook.com/ferniefix/posts/1097410366973206/?paipv=0&eav=AfbM6dS3FObjSz1yhE-GSx1Koycr4XCZ_n-ChHBNUf_hXeXTp7pqSTZUo_N98J60eYI&_rdr). For tandem flights or more information, visit [Fernie Paragliding on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/fernieparagliding/?hl=en). The launch site features a wooden ramp built over a cliff, and wire assistance is almost always needed, especially when conditions are soarable. The ramp was refurbished in 2007, and some trees were cleared to improve the launch area. The road to the launch site is usually accessible from the end of June to mid-September due to snow. The last 2 km of the road are rocky, making a 4WD vehicle preferable, although a high-clearance 2WD vehicle can also manage. The landing zone is a level grassy field alongside the highway west of Fernie, near the Fernie Ski Hill turnoff. It must be soarable to reach the LZ, and there is a railway crossing to access the field. Vehicles are not allowed to drive across the tracks, so gliders must be packed out of the field. There is an emergency field below the launch, but it is not recommended to use it unless absolutely necessary.
