Description
El Yelmo, located in Spain, is a premier paragliding site known for its excellent thermal soaring and cross-country potential. It is particularly famous for acro paragliding, earning the title of the acro mecca in Spain. The main launch is best after noon, with an ideal slope for takeoff.
The site offers a breathtaking mountain experience within a large and beautiful natural park, providing cross-country opportunities in almost all directions except East. Local flying is also highly enjoyable for soaring enthusiasts.
The takeoff altitude is approximately 1809 meters, with a height difference of around 1000 meters. The launch area faces West and South, and it is spacious enough to handle zero wind conditions without issues. The best conditions are with light NW winds, while southerly and strong easterly winds can create challenging breezes and downwind landing zones.
El Yelmo is particularly known for its late afternoon restitution thermals from May to August, allowing smooth climbs up to 1000 meters above the launch, perfect for relaxing flights until sundown.
To get there, it's a 5-hour drive from Malaga or a 3-hour drive from Madrid. The meeting point for pilots is the bar 'Los Pinos' at the roundabout in Cortijos Nuevos. There is no shuttle service, so you will need to drive up from the landing zone, which takes about 25 minutes via El Robledo or Hornos.
