Description
El Bosque, Spain
Elevation: 716 m
Height Difference: 460 m
Difficulty: Medium
El Bosque is a frequently used paragliding site known for its soaring and thermal soaring opportunities, with some potential for cross-country (XC) flights. The launch site is a short and small area, but with sufficient wind, it offers good soaring conditions until sundown. This site serves as an alternative to Algodonales Poniente, especially when the wind is medium strong from the W-WSW direction. It is not suitable for SSW-S winds, which can be checked at the landing zone using wind indicators.
The launch site is lower than Algodonales Poniente and is backed by the high Sierra de Grazalema, resulting in often less strong and more flyable winds compared to Algodonales Poniente. XC opportunities are somewhat limited; typically, pilots first head north along the ridge and attempt to cross the plains towards Algodonales. Heading east over the Sierra de Grazalema should only be attempted with very good thermals, sufficient height, and experience in the area, as there are no good landing possibilities for at least 15 km.
The landing zone is located southwest of the takeoff and can be reached by gliding down, provided you do not wait too long to fly over the prominent rocks and the main road. In strong winds, avoid flying over the ridge and be prepared to use your speed system.
Access: From Arcos de la Frontera, take the C-344 to El Bosque, then continue for another 5 km towards Benamahoma. Drive 2 km up the hill, following the indication with a hang gliding logo. Open and close the steel gate and drive up slowly.
