Edith's Gap, located near Kennedy Peak Trailhead in Luray, VA, is a popular paragliding site in the Shenandoah region. The site features a steep southeast-facing slope that overlooks the Shenandoah Valley, making it ideal for thermalling and cross-country (XC) flights. The launch area is a grassy, steep slope in a narrow slot, surrounded by high trees except at the top where there is a power line.
The site is accessible by car, and parking is available for up to 15 cars. The launch is managed by the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, Lee Ranger District, and the landing zone (LZ) is on Bill W. Mason's property. The LZ is a gently sloping grass field, but it is tricky due to its downslope and surrounding power lines, requiring a careful approach.
To fly at Edith's Gap, pilots need a P2 rating with an RLF (Restricted Landing Field) signoff. New or visiting pilots must get an in-person site briefing and walk the LZ to understand the preferred landing approach. The site is not suitable for hang gliders due to the size of the LZ.
The site is flyable from ESE directions, with optimal wind directions between 090-150 degrees. The glide slope to the LZ is about 4:1, and the vertical drop is approximately 835 feet. Soaring can start as early as 10:30 AM in the summer, and the site is known for good ridge and thermal soaring conditions.
