Description
Cima della Vezzana, standing at approximately 2874 meters, is the highest peak in the Pala Group of the southern Dolomites. This two-day hike and fly tour offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure for experienced paragliders and hikers.
Starting Point: Capanna Cima Comelle at 1333 meters, where ample parking is available.
Travel Directions: Take the Brennerautobahn to AS Bozen Nord, then follow the ss241 over the Karerpass into the Fassatal. Continue on the ss48 to Moena, head east over the Passo San Pellegrino to Falcade, and then drive about 3 km south through the Valle di Gares to the end of the road at Capanna Cima Comelle.
Base Camp: Bivacco Brunner at 2667 meters, approximately a 4-hour hike from the parking area.
Elevation Gain: 1350 meters to the bivouac, and an additional 530 meters from there to the summit.
Hiking Time: 4 hours to the bivouac, and 2 hours from the bivouac to the summit.
Launch Direction: Northeast to East, snow cover required for takeoff.
Landing: At the starting point, which is quite challenging due to high trees and potential tailwind conditions.
Tour Character: This is a beautiful, fully marked two-day mountain hike with some sections secured by wire ropes.
Alternative Route: You can also ascend from the Rosetta cable car station via the normal route to Vezzana, which allows for a flight to San Martino di Castrozza. The steepest sections before the Vezzana shoulder are exposed to the north.
The ascent begins at Capanna Cima Comelle, following a broad hiking trail to the waterfalls (Cascata di Gares) and then onto path 704. The route includes narrow passages with iron ladders and wire ropes. The bivouac is located in a secluded area at the base of an overhanging rock wall in Val Strut, offering a peaceful overnight stay without mobile reception.
The summit ascent takes about two hours from the bivouac, involving marked paths and some sections secured by wire ropes. Snow cover is beneficial for easier navigation and takeoff.
For those flying back to the starting point, ensure good visibility and favorable wind conditions. Alternatively, you can fly to San Martino di Castrozza, where landing is possible near the lift station to Punta Ces.
Location: Italy, Pala Group, Provinces of Trento and Belluno.
