Description

Upper Cass offers a unique paragliding experience with a 20-minute hike around the Creator Rim Trail, or a quicker 15-minute journey if you opt for the gondola. The site is best flown in a dying southerly wind, providing a safe and enjoyable flight. Before flying, you must contact the Canterbury Hanggliding and Paragliding Club. The site is regularly used and most pilots start on the northeast side. Wind direction is typically from the southwest with light winds. The minimum pilot rating required is PG2 or HG Advanced. Due to the closure of Summit Road, vehicle access is not available. You can access the site by walking from the gondola or from the top of the Rapaki track. Take-off is from a gently sloping tussock on the southwest face, close to the walking track. For landing, you can use the Lyttelton sports fields at Naval Point for bottom landing, or top landing is possible if soaring.
