Description
Cape Lookout is a historic and frequently used paragliding site on the North Oregon Coast, known for its scenic coastal soaring. While some cross-country flights are possible, most flying here is local. This site is not for beginners due to traffic behind launch and dangerous rotors. Always consult with local pilots before flying.
Cape Lookout is located about 12 miles southwest of Tillamook and 12 miles north of Cape Kiwanda. The launch is from a roadside pullout above the beach, near Anderson's Viewpoint. The designated landing zone (LZ) is the beach between the launch and the campground.
Launch GPS: 45.3536, -123.97180, Elevation: 330 feet. The launch direction is northwest, with winds from the west to north-northwest at 5-15 MPH. Pilots need at least an H2/P2 rating with a ridge soaring endorsement, and H3/P3 to fly out on the cape. The radio frequency is 151.925 unless otherwise specified.
The site is known for its spectacular views but also for its dangers. Winds of 8-10 mph at launch are usually soarable, but higher winds can create excessive lift, making it difficult to land. The area below launch is brushy, and the cliffs are tree-covered, requiring constant attention to the terrain. The cliffs drop straight into the ocean, leaving no landing areas at their base.
There are two significant gaps in the cliffs. The first gap is about 2,500 feet south of launch and requires a high starting altitude to cross safely. The second gap is about a mile out along the Cape itself and should only be crossed with sufficient lift. Beware of rotor turbulence and sink in these areas.
The viewpoint is a popular tourist spot, so be courteous and ensure spectators are clear of the launch area. Do not top land at launch due to the proximity of a 40 mph highway. Always carry a basic tree kit.
Regulations include purchasing a day-use permit for the park, landing near the day-use area or beyond the campground, and avoiding landing near the camping area, berm, or road. If unsure, consult with a park ranger or knowledgeable pilot.
