Description
Camels is a high mountain paragliding site with a launch altitude of approximately 8,000 feet above sea level, offering a vertical drop of about 3,000 feet to the landing zone (LZ). This site is best suited for westerly winds and is rarely used due to its specific wind requirements. Early morning flights can be challenging as the sun heats the back side of the launch, causing down drafts. However, as the day progresses and the valley below heats up, thermal cycles typically develop, making for better flying conditions. Note that Camels is not ideal for ridge lift, and strong winds can disrupt the thermals.
To reach Camels, take I-15 to the Springville/Rt 77 exit. Turn left off the exit ramp to head east on Rt 77 (400 S). Continue to a 4-way stop, go straight, and take your first left to reach the LZ. Alternatively, turn right to head to the launch site. Follow signs for Hobble Creek Golf Course. Just past the golf course, the road forks; take the left fork ('Left Fork Hobble Creek Road'). Continue for 2.5 miles and turn left onto a dirt road. Follow this road for roughly 20 minutes. The launch site is a steep left fork in the road. Only serious 4-wheel-drive vehicles can navigate the last 100 feet, and turning around space is limited.
The landing zone is a piano-shaped field directly below the launch, with a glide ratio of approximately 2.5:1. The LZ is privately owned by a friendly local resident known as 'Skinny'. Please be respectful and courteous when landing, as this is essentially their backyard.
