Paragliding Calvanella di Sestola Calvana

Located in Emilia Romagna, Italy, the Calvanella paragliding site offers a diverse flying experience. The main takeoff is at an altitude of 1498 meters with a height difference of 577 meters. This site is frequently used and is known for good cross-country (XC) potential, especially with northern winds. The primary takeoff direction is north, which is easy and features a grassy, ample ski track with a gentle slope. However, the south takeoff is more technical, rocky, and steep, requiring good control. The site is not recommended for beginners unless they are properly supervised. To reach the takeoff, drive from Modena towards Fanano, follow signs to Sestola, and then to Pian del Falco. From Pian del Falco, a 20-25 minute walk or a jeep ride (with prior authorization) will get you to the takeoff point. No special permissions are needed to fly here, and a shuttle service is available on weekends and holidays. The optimal flying conditions are with winds from the north or northeast, and a southern breeze between 5 to 20 km/h. Avoid flying with winds stronger than 20 km/h from the southwest due to the risk of turbulence and rough conditions. There are two official landing zones: one in Sestola near the horse ranch and another in Fanano in the valley. The Sestola landing is accessible by car and features a nearby chairlift operating on weekends in July, August, and September. The Fanano landing is reachable by taking the state road towards Porretta, about 3 km before Fanano. Local amenities include hotels, restaurants, and bars near the takeoff area.
