Description
Blowhard, New Zealand
Elevation: 1416 meters
This site is regularly used for thermal soaring, and good cross-country (XC) flights are possible. Car access is available. Make sure to follow the rules and go with local pilots who are familiar with the area.
There are two takeoff options: the main NW takeoff and another option 100 meters away for NNE-NE winds. Both are suitable for launching.
Flights in this region can be straightforward if you are familiar with the style of flying required. After each glide, as you start to fall below the crest of the ridge, you need to tuck in close to the scree and rock at the top of a sunny spur or basin aligned towards the valley breeze. Be prepared for thermal gusts, which can be tamed and ridden quickly back up to base.
Wind Direction: Suitable from 260° to 80°
Landing: In the valley. Use the western side of the river for pickup as the river can be fast-flowing and dangerous at times.
Access and Regulations: The access road goes through private property. There is a protocol to follow, so please go with a local pilot who knows the routine.
