Conditions Optimales
Description
Basil's Bump is a paragliding and hang gliding site located 2 miles east of Cache Creek on Highway 1 in South Central British Columbia. The launch elevation is 2900 feet above sea level, while the landing zone (LZ) is at 1790 feet above sea level. The site is suitable for both ridge and thermal flying, with launch directions primarily to the south and southwest.
The launch area is a rounded hilltop covered in sagebrush with a small cliff in front. Various launch points are available depending on wind conditions, and good launch skills are required for paragliders. Strong thermals, sometimes reaching 1500 feet per minute, can be present right in front of the launch, so caution is advised. Never leave your glider unattended, even in calm conditions, as thermals can break off from all over the top.
The landing zone is located in the northeast corner of a crop field below the launch, with a slight slope to the southwest. It is best to land in sagebrush fields if possible. The official landing field belongs to the Semlin Ranch, although other fields at the base have been used. Be cautious of power lines if flying low.
The site is in Class E uncontrolled airspace up to 8,000 feet above sea level. Airways V325 and V323 are nearby, with controlled airspace from 2200 feet above ground level to 12,500 feet above sea level. Class B controlled airspace is above 12,500 feet above sea level. Before any cross-country (XC) flight near the Kamloops control zone, call Transport Canada Flight Services Station at 250-376-7941. Fly around the 5-mile control zone, not through it.
