Description
The paragliding site at Boppard-Weiler in Germany offers a takeoff height of 380 meters and a height difference of 170 meters, making it a medium-difficult site. It is regularly used for soaring, and some cross-country flights are possible. However, top landing is not allowed.
The site is located at the Hochlay viewpoint, which features a meadow with parking facilities and a windsock. It is a less frequented flying area but is very scenic, ideal for extended glides and walk-and-fly activities. On days with light winds, it is also suitable for less experienced pilots.
It is crucial to observe the wind conditions at the takeoff point and wait for a good phase. Occasionally, the wind comes along the road, and with strong northerly winds, there are deep terrain jumps in the takeoff direction. Hang soaring is not very effective here; on thermal days, it is better to search for thermals further out.
The flying area can be used year-round, but there are specific restrictions:
- The Salziger Bach valley must not be overflown in March and April.
- The nature reserve "Hintere Dick – Eisenbolz" north of the takeoff must be overflown with at least 300 meters above ground.
- The Rhine meadows between Kamp-Bornhofen and Hirzenach must not be overflown to protect the nesting sites of peregrine falcons and eagle owls.
Before the first flight, pilots must be familiarized with the site's specifics by an authorized person. Only pilots with a B-license are allowed to use the site. Minimum horizontal and vertical distances to roads must be maintained, and takeoffs are only permitted with at least 10 km/h headwind. Hang gliders are not allowed.
The site is managed by the Drachen- und Gleitschirm-Fliegerfreunde Rhein-Mosel-Lahn e.V. and is recommended only for very experienced A-license pilots, with an introduction required.
