Description

The Arosa Weisshorn in Switzerland offers a beautiful yet challenging paragliding experience due to its launch sites and wind conditions. The main launch site is situated at an altitude of 2620-2645 meters. This location is popular for panoramic flights, and while cross-country (XC) flights are possible, they typically don't cover long distances. The region is known for its thermals starting from mid-February, making it a great spot for thermal flights early in the year. Although it's not an XC paradise, you can still manage flights to Prättigau, Zuoz, or Schuls. Classic flights to Chur involve a descent of 2000 meters, but be cautious of the meteorological conditions and wind in Chur. Other possibilities include thermal flights, soaring, and XC flights to Davos and the Engadin. The site is not very well-known, which means less crowding at the launch area. In winter, launches are done from the ski slopes, requiring quick take-offs. Assessing wind conditions can be tricky as the mountain is surrounded by winds from all sides, and wind indicators may point in different directions. The most reliable wind indicator is a small ribbon usually attached to the tip of the transmission mast. The Arosa Weisshorn is a standalone mountain offering three launch directions in winter and only one in summer. Its pyramid shape causes the wind to swirl around, making launches challenging. In uncertain conditions, it's advisable to use the free valley descent to avoid accidents. The north launch requires optimal wind conditions and a skilled reverse launch. Soaring conditions are often good from mid to late February at Tschuggen and above the golf course, with excellent thermals at Schafrügg in the summer afternoons. Launch Site Details: - Orientation: South, Southwest - Difficulty: Medium - Altitude: 2600 meters - Cable Car: Yes - Coordinates: 9.63653738, 46.78916525 - Walking Time: 5 minutes In summer, the only available launch direction is southwest, while in winter, northeast launches are also possible. Winter launches are performed on groomed ski slopes, which is generally not allowed in Switzerland but tolerated on the Weisshorn as long as space is left for skiers and snowboarders. The north-northwest launch is very short with no room for an aborted take-off.
