Conditions Optimales
Description
This site in Sintra, Portugal, features a hill with a height difference of 70 meters. It is occasionally used for soaring. The hill is bounded on the right by a high voltage pole (note that the air cables are not visible) and eucalyptus trees on the left. In front, there are several fields, with the first one after the road, which has a house in ruins, being the usual landing spot.
There are two take-off points: one lower and one at the top of the hill. Due to the ridge formation, it is crucial to monitor wind speed to maintain a safe distance from the top of the hill to avoid being pushed to the leeward side, which can be dangerous. The site is thermodynamic, with cycles that tend to come in forcefully and flow through the tips of the mountain, near the high voltage cables (not advisable) and the eucalyptus trees.
This location is used for training in weak conditions and is good for some basic flights. Access to the take-off points is on foot via some very discreet trails. The base of the hill is cultivated, so to maintain good relations with the landowner, it is advisable to go around the cultivated area.
Please note that flying at this site is expressly forbidden during the operating hours of the nearby Air Base, which is until 5 pm on weekdays.
