Description
The flying site in Spain offers an elevation range between 1550 and 1690 meters, with a height difference of approximately 700 meters. This site is regularly used for thermal soaring, and some cross-country (XC) flights are possible. The main takeoff direction is East/Southeast (E/SE), with another possible takeoff direction being Northwest (NW), although the coordinates for the NW launch are not known and no flights have been logged from there.
The region is known for its thermal activity, making it a good spot for thermal soaring. There is a thermal lift to the right of the main takeoff area, near a small hut. The site record for the longest flight is 21.2 km.
To reach the Southeast (SE) takeoff, start from San Lorenzo del Escorial and take the road leading to the Arboreto Luís Ceballos. Continue to the end, taking the right turns. Upon reaching a pass with a dam on the left, take a forest track on the right. A 30-minute walk with little elevation gain will bring you to the takeoff, which is small and rocky. Note that the wind direction can change in the late afternoon.
For the Northwest (NW) takeoff, although many have mentioned flying from there, no specific details or coordinates are available.
Landing is in San Lorenzo, with coordinates latitude 40.36072 and longitude -4.07598, at an altitude of 985 meters. The landing area is in front of the Cruz Roja/Hipercor, accessible via a road towards El Escorial. Park on the first street to the right.
Access to the site involves crossing El Escorial and taking an asphalt road up to the El Malagón pass. From there, a track on the right, blocked by a barrier, leads to a 20-minute walk to the takeoff area. Note that landing options are limited.
When flying, avoid landing in fields with livestock, especially those with bulls, until you pass the town of Guadarrama. Also, avoid landing near or flying over the Ministry of Interior's information center.
