Description
Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert
Type: Lake
Water type: Chop
Water hazards: Shells
Water quality: Cloudy
Infos: There's tide, because the water is connected to the sea. The water is choppy, no waves. It's deep water when it's high tide, and it's shallow for maybe 50m when it's low tide. But you can't stand because the bottom is covered with oyster shells. Booties are highly recommended.
Beach type & size: Grass - Small
Infos: The big downside of the spot is that it has a very small `beach`. The spot is just at the side of a dam, where a road passes over. So it's a bit of grass and you only have a very narrow strip to launch. You can go to the base of the dam but there are lots of shells there so that isn't too good for your gear either.
Identified hazards: Shells
Beachgoer: None
Weather specificities: May to September: water: 14-19C, air: 15-25C. October to April: water: 5-8C, air: 4-12C. So wetsuit needed all year.
Wind type: Frontal
Wind specificities: General winds are Southwest to Northwest, and 10 to 20 knots in strength. Quite solid winds here.
Best months: March, April, May, September, October, November
Access description: by Car - Get a map (or online route planner) of the Netherlands and search for `Oesterdam` it's on the N659.
Specific rules: Other
Extra: It is possible to kite there (people are doing it) but I think it's dangerous to say the least, one kite on the road and the consequences are catastrophic. So watch out with the cars on the road. Only one accident has to happen there, and kitesurfing will be banned. I must really discourage you to go kiting there, but if you really want to, make sure you use a leash and are experienced and watch out.
