Description
Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert
Type: Ocean
Water type: Shallow, Chop, Small wave
Water quality: Clean
Infos: Small to medium sized very clean chop. The water is pretty clean and this place works at all tides but is best at high tide.
Beach type & size: Sand - Medium
Infos: The beach is about 200m long and flanked by cliffs/hills etc. The beach is sandy with plenty of room to launch/land. There is a reserve for easy landing of kites. Unlike many other spots dotting the headlands, this place is very safe. However there are power lines overhanging the far right hand end of the beach. Needless to say this area is best avoided.
Identified hazards: Rocks, Power lines
Beachgoer: None
Weather specificities: Air temp winter: 13C average, sometimes up to 20C. Air temp summer: 24C average, sometimes up to 30C. Water temp can get very warm during summer. Over 30C so wetsuit definitely not required. Rash shirt for protection from the sun.
Wind type: Thermal
Wind specificities: The season at this particular spot is during summer but light days during winters also work well here. Summers here are excellent as this place gets strong thermal generated winds. When there is light fickle winds everywhere else in AK this place will be cranking with 15-25 knots of thermal breeze. The thermal breeze is from the SSW so funnels through the headlands perfectly.
Best months: January, February, March, December
Access description: by Car - From the airport take the Southwestern highway along the coast of the Manukau Harbour until you get to Hillsborough. Then get the map out and try to get to Titirangi. Then follow the signposted road that leads you to Huia. Huia is the last town/beach before you have to traverse the heads.
Specific rules: None
Extra: No license, permit needed to kite here but commonsense prevails and leashes are best worn to avoid kite hitting power lines/road etc.
Nightlife: This place is dead as. If you are in for silly business then I guess the nearby Whatipu beach will be great for clowning around in but unless you wanna drive 40km to Auckland or Manukau the nearest party spot would be Titirangi.
Accommodations: Shower, Toilet, Food
