Description
Level: Intermediate, Expert
Type: Ocean
Water type: Flat
Water hazards: Currents, Shells
Water quality: Cloudy
Infos: Flat water is on top of and behind the sandbanks which are across the deep water channel. To get to the flat water you need to cross the channel which can be choppy when the wind is strong. There is an obstruction which may be a hazard at low tide, but this is marked with a buoy.
Beach type & size: Sand - Small
Infos: Occasional beach users, but since it's not a very nice beach at low tide (when it's kiteable) beach users aren't generally an issue.
Identified hazards: Rocks, Shells
Beachgoer: January, February, December
Wind specificities: Avoid trying to launch above mid tide as the natural bay makes the wind very fluky. Launching: Your best bet is to pump up on the beach and then rig up close to the water's edge. The ground can be slippery, so it's probably safest to do a drift launch from shallow water. On return to the beach after your session, you are safest dropping your kite in the shallow water close to the beach.
Best months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November
Access description: by Car - Park behind the beach.
Specific rules: None
Extra: Booties are a good idea as there are oyster shells on the beach. There is a Coast Guard station on site but it is not manned 24x7.
Nightlife: Nearest nightlife is in Titirangi. If you can find someone who is an RSA member, you will be able to get a cheap beer.
Accommodations: Rescue, Parking
