Dasklip Pass, located in Porterville, Western Cape, South Africa, is renowned for its consistent long-distance flights and excellent thermal soaring conditions. This site is highly frequented and is considered one of the best spots in western South Africa for paragliding. The launch site is situated at the top of Dasklip Pass, oriented southwest to west. It is owned by Rob Manzoni, and site fees must be paid at the Flyers Lodge in Porterville. Ensure you get a thorough briefing and pay the site fee proactively. The site is optimal with light to medium winds, ideally less than 25 km/h. In lee conditions, very light southeast winds combined with prevailing thermals are preferable. Porterville averages at least four good flying days a week between November and March. If you are proficient in thermaling, achieving a 20 km cross-country flight is quite feasible. The airspace ceiling is at 2900 meters above sea level, and there is a military airspace (FAR45) 5 km west in the valley, which requires phone-in clearance. The launch area features a hang glider ramp and a shaded netting-covered area just above the road. The primary landing zone, known as Turkey Patch, is directly below the takeoff, around the Y junction at the base of the pass. The fields to the west and southeast of the junction belong to Mr. Du Bois, a friendly local farmer. Ensure you close all gates, avoid damaging fences, and steer clear of livestock. In summer, experienced guidance is highly recommended. Check the wind direction around the back of the mountain, as the takeoff site can sometimes be in the lee of a strong southeast wind. By afternoon, the wind usually shifts to a southerly direction, creating a strong rotor off the spine to the left of the takeoff. The gully to the right of the takeoff can cause a strong venturi effect, so avoid venturing deeply into it with a slow glider in a strong southwest wind. Directions to Dasklip Pass: From Cape Town, take the N1, then turn left onto the N7 and drive for 100 km to Piketberg. At Piketberg, turn right towards Porterville. Turn right at the T-junction and drive into town. Manzoni’s B&B is the third house on the right. When ready to fly, head out of Porterville, passing the T-junction and continuing north. The first right turn is signposted ‘Cardouw / Dasklip Pass’. Follow this gravel road for 10 km to reach the base of the tarred pass. Park your vehicle well off the road to avoid obstructing traffic.
