Bali, a paradise destination for many travelers, also attracts paragliders from around the world. However, flying on this Indonesian island presents as many opportunities as constraints. Here's a detailed experience report that will help you prepare for your aerial Balinese adventure.

Flying Conditions and Weather

With a 7-knot south wind forecast, the entire south coast becomes accessible. If the wind shifts slightly to the southwest, you can take off from the East side (Riug Paragliding) with the possibility of reaching the western tip. Be careful though: the further west you go, the stronger the wind becomes and the higher the cliffs rise.

Note that conditions are optimal after 3 PM until sunset. An important factor to consider when planning your flights.

Main Sites and Their Specificities

Riug Paragliding (East)

• Fee: 300,000 IDR for the first visit, then 100,000 IDR
• Advantages: Welcoming staff and WiFi available
• Features: Views of Mount Batur and the lagoon

Timbis (Center)

• Fee: 100,000 IDR
• Disadvantages: Complex takeoff, restricted space
• Atmosphere: Unwelcoming and uncooperative staff
• Traffic: More than 20 tandem pilots simultaneously in a limited space

Ulu Paragliding (West)

• Fee: 300,000 IDR + mandatory radio rental (50,000 IDR if needed)
• Advantages: Only site offering a safety briefing, numerous backup plans available
• Restrictions: Strictly defined flying zones between two temples (East and West)
• Consequence of violations: Permanent ban
• Landscapes: Impressive cliffs, luxury hotels, view of Bali's airport

Implicit Rules and Constraints

Paragliding in Bali operates according to strict rules that may surprise Western visitors:

1. Absolute priority to tandem flights: Both on the ground and in the air
2. Site exclusivity: Paying for one site does not give access to landing zones of other sites
3. Takeoff/landing windows: Approximately 30 seconds to take off or land
4. Attendance: In low season, about 100 tandem flights per site daily and only 4 solo pilots
5. High season: From May to September, the number of tandem flights doubles (about 150 in rotation)
6. Tandem flight organization: Continuous rotation without collapsing the wings (one passenger descends, another boards)

Technical Difficulties

• Technical landings in windy conditions (requiring big ears and stall techniques)
• Few backup plans in case of problems
• Several beaches inaccessible by foot – risk of spending the night there if forced to land at low tide
• Extreme precision required for takeoffs and landings
• Little help from locals in case of difficulty

This spot is absolutely not suitable for:

• Beginners
• Pilots who get stressed in technical conditions
• People looking for exceptional landscapes

If you find yourself landed on an isolated beach, plan to negotiate return transportation or use a "Grab" service (local Uber equivalent).

Bali offers interesting flying possibilities but in a highly commercialized framework that can be hostile to solo paragliders. The logistical constraints, high attendance, and lack of escape routes make it a destination recommended only for experienced pilots who are comfortable in technical conditions and capable of adapting to a densely populated aerial environment.

Located in Bali, Indonesia, the coastal ridge soaring site on the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula offers an exhilarating paragliding experience. The site is known for its frequently used launch points and good coastal soaring conditions, making it possible to achieve impressive distances. The take-off area is situated at the top of a cliff with a sloped top area, providing a spacious and comfortable launch zone. The primary take-off location is Hill 100 Nusa Dua, while the designated landing zone is Timbis Beach. The flying season typically runs from May to October. Wind conditions in this region are generally stable but can be strong. Thermals are rare, and the best wind direction is directly from the south, coming off the sea. The long beach cliffs are ideal for ridge soaring, allowing pilots to glide towards the west (Uluwatu) or east (Hotel Nikko). For those interested in the site specifics, the coordinates are as follows: - Road access: 8.8319 S, 115.19093 E - Site location: 8.8420 S, 115.1918 E The site features a 15 km long cliff, perfect for sea-side ridge soaring. Pilots can fly left towards the Niko Resort Hotel, where they can even soar above the hotel's pool, providing a thrilling spectacle for poolside guests. This site is also suitable for beginners and learners. A site fee of USD 20 is required, which is valid for 12 months. When flying right from the launch, pilots can head towards the spectacular Ungala Cliffs. However, caution is advised when the wind is from the SSE to SE, as return flight penetration can be challenging, and there are limited landing opportunities below the cliffs. Additionally, rotor effects can occur at certain wind strengths, particularly at the Ungala end and about 50 meters back from the launch area ridge. In such conditions, it is safer to opt for a beach landing.
