Discovering a Perfect Spot

Lagoa de Obidos on the central west coast of Portugal remains somewhat of a hidden gem, despite being just 30 km from the well-known wave hotspot Peniche. Due to the waist-deep lagoon and the reliable Nortada wind, this spot is slowly developing into the place to be for beginners, but wave enthusiasts also get their money's worth through the direct access to the sea.

The Lagoon Areas

Lagoa de Obidos is divided into three distinct areas:

  • The main area is the optimally usable water surface of 2 x 1.5 km for all water sports such as wing foiling, windsurfing, and of course kitesurfing. The transition with the sharp edge of the sandbank marks where the optimal surfing area for beginners to professionals begins.
  • The second area is strongly dependent on the tide levels and is crisscrossed with many channels and sandbanks, as well as the opening to the sea with the corresponding shore break. This area is, in my opinion, only interesting for advanced kiters and windsurfers.
  • In the southern beach area is the entrance to the sea. It is generally calmer and more pristine here.

It's worth noting that the area towards the sea is subject to seasonal restrictions. During the high season from mid-June to mid-September, water sports are forbidden on the beaches. However, you can start and land in the peripheral areas of the beaches toward the sea all year round, but you should always keep a decent distance from beachgoers.

Wind Conditions

The prevailing wind direction in summer is the Nortada, which is somewhat linked to the trade wind in Portugal and is often intensified by thermals. This wind direction is optimal if you want to ride the waves at the front of the beach. Here you will have a linear side-onshore that makes your wave session enjoyable.

In the lagoon, where most of the surf action usually takes place, you can surf the spot with all wind directions since this area is almost like a lake. The Nortada blows in nicely here too but is somewhat compressed by the hills in the hinterland and therefore comes in a bit stronger but unfortunately also a bit gustier. Basically, in summer you have a fairly high wind yield, making this a reliable destination.

Nature Reserve Considerations

It's important to note that entries into the nature reserve should definitely be observed and respected.

Entry Points

The lagoon offers three main entry points, all of which have direct beach access with associated parking:

  • The eastern entry point, Nadadoro, is at the oldest surf and sailing school in Obidos. Here you can get everything you need for water sports. Since the Nortada is somewhat sheltered by the hinterland, the entry is very gusty and thus not quite optimal.
  • At Ponta do Espichel, the southwestern entry point, most people go onto the water. Since the beach here is very narrow, especially at high tide, you typically start from the water. This is also where most of the mobile schools are located. The wing and kite foil entry is about 150 m upwind at the corner. From here it's only about 50 m to chest-deep water.
  • Entry point number 3, with a bit more space for setting up and starting, is Poça Pequena. The anchored boats and somewhat more seagrass are slightly disturbing here.

Suitable For All Levels

It's almost self-explanatory that this spot is really great for beginners, but advanced riders and freestyle junkies also get their money's worth here and out on the open sea.

Schools and Equipment

There is no shortage of kite and wing foil schools here. Most are mobile, offer camps, have a high level of instruction, and current equipment. There are plenty of mobile kite schools available throughout the area.

Accommodations

For camping accommodations and pitches: In the off-season, you can easily find an overnight parking spot with a camper van via Park4Night. In the high season, only the Park AutoCaravans Foz do Arelho in the northeast near the sea exit or Camping Orbitur to the east remain options.

Regarding good accommodations, you will surely find a great apartment or hotel through the usual booking portals.

Transportation and Accessibility

The nearest airport is Lisbon, making this spot easily accessible for international travelers.

The parking situation is currently very relaxed, though it may be different during the high season.

While you have the finest sandy beach at the front, the entries in the lagoon are covered with small stones, shells, and seagrass. Therefore, always have a pair of neoprene socks or booties in your luggage.

Wind-Free Days

No problem on wind-free days - simply put your feet up or explore the surrounding area. The picturesque region offers plenty to see and do even when the wind doesn't cooperate.

Next Destination: Porto

For those continuing their kitesurfing journey through Portugal, Porto offers a great beginner wave spot at the city beach, making it an excellent next stop on your itinerary.

In Summary

Lagoa de Obidos offers a perfect combination of reliable wind conditions, suitable terrain for all skill levels, and the tranquility that many kitesurfers seek. Whether you're just starting out or looking to hone your skills in varied conditions, this central Portuguese gem deserves a place on your kitesurfing bucket list.
