This site, located in the UK, is a regularly used and very good soaring location, suitable for both paragliding and hang gliding. It offers easy takeoff and landing options, including toplanding and beach landing. Inland-bound cross-country flights are also possible from here. This site is historically significant as one of the oldest hang gliding locations worldwide, where free flight first started. For low wind conditions, launch from the designated takeoff area. In strong wind conditions, it is recommended to launch from a slightly lower position. Toplanding is generally straightforward. To access the site, park at Marine Drive Car Park and walk up directly. Access and Parking: There are five car parking spaces near the takeoff area, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Hang glider pilots can drop off their equipment if all spaces are taken but must then find alternative parking. Close all gates behind you and do not park too close to the trough to allow livestock access. Two local commercial schools have additional parking spaces, bringing the total to seven. Their vehicles will be marked with their school logos. Alternative Parking: - Little Roadway Farm, Georgeham Road, Woolacombe: [Little Roadway Farm](www.littleroadway.co.uk) - Marine Drive Car Park: Ample paid parking available just below takeoff. Takeoff & Rigging Areas: Hang glider pilots typically rig to the left (south) on the short grass, but both hang glider and paraglider pilots can rig anywhere except in the takeoff and landing strip area. The takeoff area is marked by red streamers and a windsock. On busy days, fluorescent cones will mark the launch area. Top Landing: Hang gliders can land anywhere behind the wall, while paragliders can land in front of the wall but should clear the takeoff area immediately. In stronger winds, paragliders should be cautious of their wings getting dragged towards the wall, which has barbed wire on either side. Bottom Landing: Bottom landing is allowed on the green to the right of takeoff and in front of Marine Drive car park. Be cautious of rotor in stronger winds. Landing on the beach south of Mill Rock is also permitted. No flying below 100ft or landing north of Mill Rock unless in an emergency. XC Potential: The site has great cross-country potential, with flights over 100 km achieved. Ensure significant height when flying over wind turbines approximately 5 km downwind. Hazards: Be aware of the wall with barbed wire running the length of the takeoff field. Avoid landing in the bowl in the landing field and give horse riders plenty of clearance. Acrobatic Manoeuvres: Acrobatic maneuvers are prohibited within 500 feet of any person, in accordance with the Air Navigation Order. CANP: Register a CANP before 8 pm the evening before flying by calling 0800 515 544. Rules for Keeping Takeoff Area Clear: On busy days, orange plastic bollards will mark the top takeoff area to keep it clear. If you land in this zone, move your equipment immediately. Takeoff: Easy, large, gently sloping takeoff.
