Whitewool is an east-north-east facing ridge located in Hampshire, UK. It features a small bowl at the southern end that can accommodate a more north-easterly direction. The slope is smooth and free of obstructions, with a gentler incline at the bottom, making slope landings more comfortable. However, there is no bottom landing field, and cross-country potential is limited due to airspace restrictions and the Southampton CTA/CTR. This site is exclusively for paragliders and is managed by the Sky Surfing Club (SSC). Pilots must be members of the SSC or one of the clubs with which SSC has a Reciprocal Agreement. Visitors and guests are not permitted. Aero-modellers are also not allowed to use this site to avoid conflicts. The site is located at a height of 190 meters (624 feet) above sea level, with a top-to-bottom height of 200 feet. The best wind direction for flying is 070 degrees, although it can accommodate wind directions from 020 to 100 degrees. The site is suitable for Club Pilots. To access Whitewool, travel north on the A3(M) from Portsmouth and take the slip road signposted for Clanfield. Turn left onto Chalton Lane, continue for 1 mile, then turn right past the Rising Sun Pub onto East Meon Road. Follow the signs to East Meon, and after approximately 3 miles, bear left and then right at the junction along Droxford Road, following the signs to Warnford. The site is located three-quarters of a mile past the crossroads on the right. Parking is available on the north-east side of the road, on the grass verge to the south of the stile, under the hedgerow. A maximum of 10 cars is allowed, including any public or spectators already present. Take-off can be done at any point along the slope. All landings must be made on the slope, as there is no bottom landing field. Top landings can be made anywhere within the site boundary. Be aware of potential hazards, including turbulence downwind of the large tree at the bottom of the hill in all wind conditions. Severe turbulence has been experienced in thermic conditions, and there have been two serious accidents in recent years. Rules for the site include: 1. Strictly members only, plus reciprocals, with a maximum of 20 pilots on site. 2. Only 10 cars are allowed to park on the east side of the road south of the gate. If spectators accumulate heavily, flying should cease until the road clears. 3. Pay the £1 site fee in the post on the fence-line down the slope on the right. 4. Dogs are not allowed on site under any circumstances. 5. If the site gets busy, move to Mercury/Chalton. 6. New pilots must get a site briefing before flying. 7. Do not climb over any fences. Consider that this is a highly sensitive site, visible to the owners, and any breach of the rules could result in losing access. The reverse side of the ridge is owned by English Nature and is a nature reserve that has banned all forms of recreational flying. Car break-ins and thefts are common in the area. For cross-country flights, one good climb will take you into Southampton airspace at 3000 feet, so having a GPS with an airspace alarm is essential. Thermals are prevalent, with reliable house thermals in the middle of the ridge and at both ends. Be cautious of the deep gully and higher venturi over the trees to the north of the hill.
