This site is rarely used for soaring due to its proximity to a military firing range. If you see a red flag, do not fly. This is a military firing range. Check with the MOD before flying: 01752 822516 or 07817 028790. Firing Range Information: - Do not handle any objects that could be shells or ammunition. Rigging: - Hang gliders should rig along the western edge of the field. - Paragliders should be aware of hang gliders above and behind them during inflation and landing. Top Landing: - If no flags are flying, approach from the east or west. - If flags are flying, approach only from the west. - Do not fly downwind (north) of the stone wall. - Emergency landing is available in the adjoining field to the west. Bottom Landing: - Land on the beach below takeoff at low tide only. There is a steep path from the beach back to the top about 100 meters west of takeoff. - Alternatively, land at Tregantle Beach, which has an easier carry-up. Be cautious of cross-winds and people on the beach. Hazards: - Military firing range at Tregantle Fort. Do not fly over or in front of red flags. - Do not fly more than 3 hours either side of low tide. - Note the position of the stone wall along the downwind edge of the field. Do not land on the north side of this wall as the field is usually in crop. Hang gliders use the wall as a line for top landing approach; paragliders can land comfortably 10-20 meters in front of the wall. - Be very careful when driving out onto the B3247 through the gate due to poor visibility. Have someone as a lookout or turn hard left and park in front of the adjoining gateway while closing the access gate. Local Flying: - This site is a good alternative to Freathy, especially if the ranges at Tregantle are active. If so, call the ranges on 01752 822516 or 07817 028790 to inform them of your presence. If red flags are flying, turn right as soon as you are comfortably airborne and gain height near the golf course. Approach for top landing from the west. XC Flying: - In the right conditions, a coastal run along Whitsands Bay is possible. Directions: - Access the site off B3247 through the gate directly opposite Trethill Lane. Park in the lane while opening the gate. Drive to the front of the hill through the second gate (keep this shut if there is livestock in either field). Leave your kit next to the wall at the western edge of the field and drive back to the gate, parking along the hedge. A maximum of six gliders and five vehicles are allowed, so share lifts if possible. If the gate is padlocked, phone Karl for the combination.
