The Derbyshire Soaring Club's north-easterly site is a popular spot for paragliding enthusiasts. It accommodates winds from NNE to East and offers a good take-off area, though there is no top landing available. The bottom landing is excellent. Note that the site may be closed in spring for lambing season. With sufficient altitude, you can fly downwind and land at the Windy Knoll landing field. For training, the local hang gliding and paragliding school is d-f-c.co.uk, led by Chief Flying Instructor S Hudson. The site is currently open with no reported issues. The wind direction ranges from NNE to ENE. The recommended take-off points are Treak Cliff A at 350m for hang gliders and Treak Cliff B at 335m for paragliders. Long Cliff offers a higher take-off at 380m. The landing area is at 210m. Be cautious of the Daventry CTA airspace at FL65 and 4500' immediately to the west. The site is approached via a path passing the Blue John Cavern. Long Cliff serves as an alternative to Lords Seat in strong winds. Most pilots launch from Treak Cliff and fly across to Long Cliff. The East Face landing is a large field, and only this field should be used unless in an emergency. Windy Knoll landing can be used in light winds, but be aware that the wind can be strong there. There is a safe top landing on Long Cliff, but avoid the severe rotor behind Treak Cliff. For safety, be mindful of busy traffic, especially on the popular route from Mam Tor to Hope cement works. Avoid getting blown back behind Mam Tor and watch out for power lines and trees near the bottom landing field. Special rules include avoiding Treak Cliff for low airtime pilots. The site is closed during lambing season (usually February to April), but overflying is permitted. Notices are posted at access points, and updates are available on the DSC newsletter/website. Parking for Treak Cliff is available in a large lay-by beyond the Blue John Cavern. For Long Cliff, use the bottom landing car park or the area opposite Speedwell Cavern. Access to Treak Cliff follows the path past the Blue John Cavern, while Long Cliff is accessed from the Speedwell Cavern at the foot of Winnats Pass.
