Height: 365 meters, Height Difference: 300 meters This site is exclusively for members of the SE Wales Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club and the Welsh Free Flight Federation. It is primarily a soaring site. Location: Wales, UK Wind Direction: SSE - SSW (150° - 210°) Road Access: From Abergavenny or Crickhowell, take the A40 and turn onto the minor road signposted to the Sugar Loaf. The road is narrow and frequently used, so please be considerate to other users. Parking: Parking is available on the north side of the road, approximately 200 meters before the main National Trust car park. Take-off: Access to the take-off area is by foot only, requiring a short carry up. The take-off area is about 100 meters back from the access road at the top of Mynydd Llanwenarth. Rig and take-off to the southwest of the grass track along the ridge line. The take-off slope is very shallow and not well suited for paragliders. Landing: Top landing is possible to the northeast of the take-off area. There are two alternative bottom landing fields at the base of the hill. If you plan to land in either of these fields, you must contact the owners, Mr. or Mrs. Davies, at 01873 853271, but not before 9:30 am. Always remove gliders via the gate and do not obstruct the main road. Avoid landing in the adjacent field. Castle Meadows can also be reached under the right conditions. Flying: This is primarily a thermal site and not a ridge soaring site, making it more challenging. The shallow slope means it is not ideal for paragliders except in the most favorable conditions. Hazards: The site is prone to extreme turbulence in winds above 15 mph. Other Rules: The area is owned by the National Trust, and disturbance must be minimized. A maximum of six fully rigged gliders is allowed at any one time. Flying is not permitted on Bank Holiday weekends. The Sugar Loaf Mountain is not part of this site.
