Putsborough is a coastal cliff site with a height of 75 meters, primarily used for cliff soaring at low tide. It is rarely used, making it a quieter spot for paragliding enthusiasts. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead at all times. Access and Parking: From Croyde, follow the signs to Putsborough Beach. The lane is narrow, so be cautious of oncoming traffic. About 500 feet before the turn to Putsborough Beach, there is a metal gate on the west side of the road. Access to take off with a vehicle is through this gate. Ensure the gate is closed upon entering and leaving. Follow the track adjacent to the wall and park where the wall turns 90 degrees south. Parking is limited to members and temporary members only. Alternative Parking: Public parking is available at Putsborough Beach: http://www.putsborough.com/carparking.asp. This facility includes a public toilet, café, and a phone in the office for emergencies. It is a 5-minute walk up the hill to take off from here via the North Devon Coastal Path. Takeoff & Rigging Areas: Putsborough is a coastal cliff site, so rig behind takeoff. The takeoff area is marked with a U on the map. Previous cliff launch experience is recommended. Hang Gliders may require a Nose Man. Top Landing: There are numerous landing areas in the fields behind launch. Be cautious of potential rotor close to the cliff. Hang Gliders should land further back to avoid rotor. Bottom Landing: At high tide, there is no bottom landing. Ensure you judge the conditions properly and launch when the sea is not at high tide to have a bottom landing option on the beach. During summer, the beach can be busy, so give the public plenty of room and notice of your landing intentions. XC Potential: Putsborough is a coastal ridge soaring site. To the south of launch is Croyde Bay, so avoid flying downwind. It offers great ridge soaring along the coast to Baggy Point, approximately 2 km west of launch. Note that there is no bottom landing. If in doubt, top land in the fields following the cliff site. Hang Gliders should ensure plenty of height for a proper top landing. Paragliders have limited side landings, so similar advice applies. Hazards: - High tide means no bottom landing. Launch when the tide is out. - Be cautious of sea breeze, which can switch off suddenly, causing extreme sink. - Avoid flying in strong winds to prevent being blown over the back towards the bay. - The launch site is close to the North Devon Coastal Path, frequented by walkers. - If a search and rescue helicopter flies over the site, all pilots must land immediately. Acrobatic Manoeuvres: Acro or radical manoeuvres are prohibited within 500 feet of any person, in the air or on the ground, in accordance with the Air Navigation Order. Any manoeuvre that could impact others if it went wrong is also prohibited. CANP: If you plan to fly at Putsborough, call the Low Flying Booking to register at CANP before 8 pm the evening before at 0800 515 544. A local Air Sea Rescue Helicopter regularly covers this area, so a CANP is mandatory.
