This site, located in the UK, is frequently used for soaring and cross-country (XC) flights and is also a venue for competitions. However, it is a members-only site managed by the South East Wales Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club. Visitors are generally not welcome, reflecting a more closed approach. The site has a height of 360 meters and is best flown in wind directions from NE to ESE, with the optimal direction being ENE. The minimum rating required for both hang gliding and paragliding is CP (Club Pilot). Take-off: - The bottom take-off (A) is a moderate but fairly flat carry from the car park. Ensure you rig in a sensible place without blocking paths or tracks. The take-off can be turbulent in strong winds. - Paragliders frequently use the top take-off (B). Landing: - Top landing can be tricky and should be approached with caution. The safest top landing area (C) is well back on the shoulder, behind the track. Avoid landing by the trig point due to severe rotor. - The main bottom landing field (D) is marked by a windsock on the South boundary and a barn in the corner by the gate. If occupied by livestock, use the next field to the South (E), but beware of trees in the SW corner. Access: - From the A465 on minor roads, observe the club’s one-way traffic system. Larger vehicles may need to use the up road in both directions. - Parking is available in field (P) by the second gate on the right after the final bend. Do not park on the road or pass gliders over hedges, walls, or fences. Use the gate and close it after use. - Cars can also be left at the Pandy Inn car park, with a ferry up to the site. Comments: - Ensure your membership is up to date before visiting. - The site features a scenic ridge of around 10 km (6 miles). In favorable conditions, it’s possible to fly on to Hay Bluff. However, the site can be turbulent in strong winds, especially when the wind is off to the North. - Safe top landing areas are limited. Club Pilots with less than 10 hours logged may only fly under the supervision of an Instructor or Club Coach. - The site is closed from 1st to 21st May to allow stock to settle on the hillside. Hazards: - Rotor can be severe in strong winds, particularly from the large tree to the North of the lower take-off. Paragliders should avoid dropping much below the lower ridge due to the hazardous proximity of trees.
