Pakiri is one of the most scenic coastal paragliding sites in the North Island of New Zealand. Located approximately 8 kilometers northwest of Leigh and about 87 kilometers from Auckland CBD, it offers breathtaking views and a unique flying experience. To reach Pakiri, take State Highway 1 to Warkworth, turn right at the Hill Street intersection, and follow the signposts to Leigh. In Leigh, turn left at the Fire Station and follow the road for about six kilometers up a large hill. Once at the top, and about 700 meters after viewing Pakiri beach to the north, turn right into M Greenwood Road and drive to the end of the gravel road to park by the gates. Note that some property owners have put 'Private Property' signs on their fences, but the road itself is not private, and you can drive to the end and park. Access the site by using the gate to your right and walking a few meters downhill. The launch sites are close to each other, so coordination between pilots is necessary if both paragliders (PG) and hang gliders (HG) are operating simultaneously. For landing, paragliders can either top land or land on the approved sections of the beach, restricted to the area from the rocks immediately below take-off up to a point about 1 kilometer northwest. Do not land or walk on the beach northwest of this area, as it is Maori freehold land, and the owners have requested no landings there. Hang gliders should be aware of the private property to the north. The preferred landing zone is currently the cricket grounds at the end of Pakiri River Road, but further discussions are needed to ensure official approval. Pilots must return to launch via the approved access track marked in yellow on the map. This route follows the ridge line and passes through a Pā site on the peak of the hill, so please stick to the route. The site operates under specific conditions set by the Auckland Council. Vehicles must be parked outside the gate at the end of M Greenwood Road, and access to the site is by foot only. The number of users at any one time must be lower than 15, and any organized event with more participants must be approved through the Discretionary Use Process. No physical site maintenance is allowed without Council approval. The site radio channel is Channel 20 - 476.900MHz. Paragliding requires a PG 2 rating with 20 hours of flight time, and hang gliding requires an intermediate rating. Caution is advised for the main take-off, especially in light winds, as there is a long thin wire suspended directly in front of and below the take-off area. Severe vertical rotor can occur in NE winds, and the lift band can vary depending on weather conditions. Novice pilots should be cautious, especially under northerly conditions. The height ceiling for airspace is 6,500 feet ASL. Seasonal farming requirements may impose additional restrictions, so reference to the site monitor is necessary before flying.
