Otivar, located in the region of Granada, Spain, is a frequently used paragliding site known for its excellent thermal soaring conditions and cross-country potential. The site is particularly popular in the winter months due to its lower take-off altitude, which allows for better height gains before hitting the inversion layer. The take-off altitude is 903 meters, with a height difference of 374 meters. The site is best suited for intermediate to expert pilots due to the challenging landing field, which is too small and committed for beginners. The take-off area is a nice clear slope, with enough room for two gliders to launch simultaneously. However, top landing is tricky due to cables directly behind the launch area. The site works well with nil wind, light east wind, and light south wind. It is not recommended to fly in moderate to strong south wind, strong east wind, moderate to strong west wind, or north wind. The landing field is located further towards the sea, visible from the take-off area, beside a bend in the road. It is lined with pine trees on one side and requires careful approach due to thermal activity and turbulence caused by the trees. It is advisable to use the road to track your height and follow it in, avoiding low turns. The surrounding scenery is spectacular, with views of the Mediterranean Sea about 15 km away, impressive gorges, spiky peaks, and pine trees. The site offers some cross-country opportunities, including the possibility of landing on the beach for a swim or following the mountains west into the province of Malaga. To get to Otivar from Granada, take the motorway towards Motril. After approximately 15 km, you will see a BP garage on the right. A couple of kilometers further, take the exit marked 'Otivar' and follow the signs. The winding road will eventually lead you to the take-off area, located near some communication antennas.
