    Newhaven is a frequently used coastal soaring site in the UK, known for its excellent flying conditions and multiple takeoff options. The main wind direction is SSW. This site is sensitive, so it's crucial to contact the Southern Hang Gliding Club before flying and follow all site rules. A briefing and day membership are necessary. It is flyable when other sites like Beachy Head are not working. A cliff run of 6.5 miles to Brighton Marina is possible under the right conditions. The site is managed by Lewes District Council and monitored by the Coastwatch team. Visiting pilots must contact the club before flying to understand the restrictions and procedures. This is crucial to maintain access to the site. Take-off: The most frequently used takeoff spots for paragliders are in front and slightly east of the coastguard tower in SE winds, and approximately 200m further west in S and SSW winds. There are many other launch spots available. Landing: Top landing is generally not recommended for hang gliders due to the small area and rough ground. Avoid overflying the Park Homes site to the west of takeoff and the bungalows near the cliff. Keep noise to a minimum near residential areas. Hazards: In light winds, clearing the cliff edge in front of takeoff is crucial. Insufficient lift can make bottom landing challenging. In marginal SSE winds, reaching the bottom landing area from the fort may be difficult. Avoid flying over areas with no bottom landing. Soaring the breakwater is strictly prohibited. Airflow: The field behind the main SSW cliff often generates a large rotor. Avoid getting blown back into this area. In SW winds, expect a reduction in lift and a headwind when approaching the main cliff. Rigging: Hang glider pilots should rig at the designated HG takeoff area. Emergency Landing Signal: In case of an incident requiring a rescue helicopter, the Newhaven Coastwatch Volunteer coastguards will sound an air horn with 4 short blasts (Morse code H). Land immediately. Directions: Follow the one-way system around Newhaven town center, turn left at the police station (South Road), and continue into Fort Road. For the Fort car park, turn right after the sports ground and go up the hill. For the beach car park, continue straight and turn right once in the car park. Park at the far end. Car Parking: Use the Fort car park or the beach car park if the Fort is full. Beware of thieves and do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
