Accessibility: From the traffic light in the center of Sulzano, take the turn towards Martignago and continue for 3.8 km through various inhabited areas. At the junction with Nistisino and Val Trompia, turn left towards Santa Maria del Giogo on a narrow uphill road. Continue for 2.2 km and just before reaching the Santa Maria chapel, turn left onto an unpaved road marked "Gole." After about 1.1 km, the road becomes paved again for a short stretch. Turn right at the hairpin bend and continue for another 800 m. After a series of hairpin turns near the end of the road, you will reach the launch site, which is immediately above the roadway. With some caution regarding potholes, transverse bumps, and depressions, the launch site is accessible with a regular car. Prevailing Breeze: Front breeze (South-West) Wind Indicator: Windsock Launch Difficulty: Medium due to the narrow width. Flight Possibilities: - After launching, turn right to follow the slope, trying to gain enough altitude to return above the launch site. You can then reach the higher launch of Gole, where you can catch a thermal that provides sufficient altitude to cross towards the ridge leading to Punta Almana. From there, you can proceed to the Forcella launch, Caprello, Guglielmo, and beyond, as described in the Forcella launch section. Once you reach the Gole Alto launch, you can also follow the ridge to Santa Maria, taking advantage of the numerous thermals. With an altitude of 1800 m above sea level at Santa Maria del Giogo, you can move towards the antennas positioned to the South-West and then continue towards Provaglio d'Iseo, Clusane, Monte Bronzone, or towards the antennas positioned to the East, allowing you to head towards Sant Onofrio and Brescia. - After launching, turn left to follow the slope, trying to gain altitude where possible (the most likely area is near the small rocks followed by a gully just before reaching Santa Maria del Giogo). The flight opportunities are the same as described in the previous point. When flying towards Brescia or Provaglio, pay particular attention as the areas to be crossed have few fields for emergency landings. Carefully evaluate altitude and wind direction. Landing: Sale Marasino. Directions from Iseo: Approximately 10 km to Sale Marasino, via Sulzano and Croci to 'Santa Maria del Giogo' (Bar/Church/CAI Refuge). Follow the signs for 'Santa Maria del Giogo' (accessible by car). At coordinates 45°40'56.38" N / 10°07'56.95" E, take the last possible turn before Santa Maria to the north, and follow the private gravel road with three hairpin turns almost to its end (private property). Park there and follow the trail to the launch point (SP Gole Alp or higher to SP Gole Sattel). Local pilots are friendly and often offer rides. If you speak some Italian, the trattoria in Portole is a great source of information and excellent food. The owner was the first Advance importer in Italy. On weekends, when locals from Milan are around, the atmosphere is very friendly. During my three visits, I was the only guest and always received good tips and homemade grappa at the bar (left fridge). Camping at the landing site is possible with prior arrangement. The landing site by the lake is surrounded by buildings and can be turbulent. The landing site at the bar (trattoria) is large and easy to approach.
