    Iron Mountain in San Diego, USA, is a challenging and rarely used paragliding site. It is not a developed site, meaning there are no cleared launch areas, and advanced launch skills and spot landing are mandatory. Conditions can be extremely dangerous, and the site is currently being explored for future use. The site is located within an Open Space Preserve and lacks use agreements, meaning it is not managed or supported by the San Diego Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (SDHGPA). The SDHGPA does not condone flying at this site and recommends against it due to the significant risks involved. If you choose to fly here, you must take full responsibility for your actions and any potential damage or legal issues that may arise. The launch is a strenuous 2.8-mile hike from the trailhead, and dehydration is a concern, especially in warm weather. The peak/launch altitude is 2,696 feet, and the airspace is limited by the approach path into Miramar MCAS Airport (NKX), with a ceiling of 3,800 feet. The site has heavy hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use, and the launch and landing zones are unimproved and must remain so. The best conditions for flying are 7-10 mph winds from the NW, W, or SW, typically in the evening. However, it can be very turbulent and strong during the summer months. There is no official landing zone, no wind socks, and possible wake turbulence from trucks on Highway 67. The site can only handle one or two pilots at a time due to the small window and narrow soaring zone. The terrain is complex, affecting micro wind directions, and there is a significant risk of other air traffic, including rescue helicopters in case of emergencies.
