This site in the UK offers a variety of takeoff options and is suitable for soaring with some potential for cross-country flights. However, it is rarely used. The site record is 14.8 km. Please note that flying is not permitted during the shooting season from October 1st to February 1st. During this period, park near the cattle grid and avoid the plantation area. Wind Direction: SW (205 – 245) Coordinates: 54.138092, -2.069956 OS Grid: Windbank - SD 966704, Hawkswick – SD 951713 Height: Windbank – 1230ft AMSL, 450ft top to bottom; Hawkswick – 1290ft AMSL, 625ft top to bottom All grades of flyers are welcome. Parking: - Windbank: From February 2nd to September 30th, park a few meters above the road, at least 150m away from the plantation. From October 1st to February 1st, park by the cattle grid. - Hawkswick: Park on the south side of the river via the bridge in the grassy area opposite the village, or in the private car park in the village for a fee of £1.50. Access: - Windbank: Walk straight up the hill to the top left corner. Use the ladder stile and keep the wall on your left until you reach the public footpath and another stile leading to takeoff. - Hawkswick: Via public footpath between farm buildings, then left up a private track across the ridge. Capacity: The site can support all those that turn up if there is good lift on the ridge. Hazards: - Windbank: Steep drop into the river southwest of the road. Avoid rotor behind the crags. - Hawkswick: Two bottom landing fields. The safest one is about 1km northwest of Hawkswick village. The alternative field is immediately after crossing the bridge from Hawkswick, but it can suffer from turbulence in strong westerlies. Rules: - Do not fly over the plantation at Windbank. - Land before reaching the road and avoid cars and people in the landing area. - A £2 parking fee at Windbank should be collected and given to Mr. Dibb at North Cote Farm. Other Comments: - Watch the wind direction when landing at the bottom of Windbank. - Trees are being planted below the Hawkswick ridge, which may affect future flying. Owner: - Windbank parking & route up: Mr. Dibb, North Cote Farm. - Neil Heseltine: takeoff and land in front. - Graham Whittaker: shooting rights. Nearest landline/mobile reception is at Conistone or the Tennants Arms at Kilnsey.
