This site offers a medium-height coastal soaring experience with a cliff takeoff, suitable for experienced pilots. The takeoff height is 94 meters. Local coastal soaring is available, but the site is challenging and recommended only for paraglider pilots with at least 20 hours of coastal soaring experience. Hang glider pilots should seek advice before attempting this site. The South Devon Hang Gliding & Paragliding Club manages this location. For more details, visit their website: [South Devon Hang Gliding & Paragliding Club](http://www.sdhgpgc.org.uk/). **Coordinates:** - Grid: SX 175 994 - Latitude: 50° 45’ 51” - Longitude: 4° 35’ 22” **Directions:** From Launceston by-pass, stay on the A30 until the turn-off for Hallworthy (B3262). Turn right onto A39, then left at Wainhouse Corner, and take the first right following signs for Dizzard. **Parking:** Park on the right-hand side of the road in an area that can accommodate several cars, opposite a stile with a footpath marked across the fields. Carry your gliders over the stile to the edge, which slopes away at 30 degrees. **Suitability:** - Hang Glider Pilots: Suitable with advice. - Paraglider Pilots: Suitable for well-experienced pilots. **Rigging:** Rig between the takeoff and top landing areas in a large flat field. **Takeoff:** Assistance is recommended for carrying hang gliders to the edge due to rotor in winds over 15 mph. Paragliders should stand at or over the front edge for a clean launch. **Top Landing:** Hang gliders need to maintain plenty of airspeed on approach due to serious wind shear/gradient. Paragliders should land well back from the front edge to avoid rotor. **Slope Landing:** There is no practical slope landing option. The cliff face is covered in thorn scrub up to 10 feet deep, making it painful and difficult to extract a glider. **Bottom Landing:** - Paragliders: Little or no bottom landing available. - Hang Gliders: Emergency bottom landing at Millook Haven is rumored but untested. A safer option is Widemouth Bay, though it involves crossing a challenging gap and landing on a beach over 2 miles away. **Hazards:** Rotor at the front of takeoff can cause problems for both takeoff and landing. There is no practical slope landing option, and bottom landing options are limited. **Local Flying:** The site offers flying at 300 feet by 2 miles, rising to 400 feet on Long Cliff. The farmer between Cancleave Strand and Chipman Strand is friendly, but the farmer behind Millook Common does not permit top landing in his fields. **XC Flying:** This site is approximately 1.25 hours from Plymouth and is closer than Woolacombe. It offers similar height and length of beat, though it is less forgiving.
