    The site at Cox Tor, with an elevation of 430 meters, is rarely used and offers limited soaring opportunities due to its shallow slope. However, it does have some potential for cross-country (XC) flying. Directions: Take the Tavistock/Princetown road to the car park south of Cox Tor. From there, drive towards Tavy and take the narrow tarmacked road on the right as the main road starts to descend. This road leads to the base of the Tor where you can park, but ensure you do not drive more than 15 meters away from the tarmac due to local Dartmoor bylaws. Top Access: A steep but short hike from the parking area at the bottom. Parking: Do not park more than 15 meters from a metalled (tarmac) road. Ensure you do not block gate access or cause any obstructions. Access: National Park Rules apply, and the site is highly visible to National Park Wardens. Suitability: - Hang Gliding (HG): Suitable for Club Pilots with advice. - Paragliding (PG): Suitable for Club Pilots. Rigging: - Hang Glider: Easy, but the rigging area is exposed in strong winds. - Paraglider: Easy. Take Off: Straightforward for both hang gliders and paragliders. Top Landing: Good, provided you avoid large boulders. Slope Landing: Be cautious of boulders, which can be hidden by bracken. Bottom Landing: - Paragliders: Generally good, but watch out for boulders hidden in bracken. - Hang Gliders: Tricky due to boulders and the sloping ground. Landing a double surface hang glider can be challenging. It is advisable to check the bottom landing area first, especially if the wind is not directly on the hill. Hazards: Avoid flying over the farm to the west of the site unless you are well above take-off height. The farmer has concerns about low-flying gliders disturbing his cattle. Be cautious of hidden boulders, especially in fern growth. Local Flying: The Tor is not very steep, so dynamic lift is limited. XC Flying: Excellent potential, especially from the west face, which allows you to follow the road across the moor to Two Bridges, Dartmeet, Ashburton, and beyond. The north face quickly meets the sea, and the northwest corner is rocky and difficult. The south face is shallow, making soaring difficult but good for training. Modern hang gliders are difficult to land on the west face. Flight Regulation: Flying on Dartmoor is controlled by law, and permission must be granted by the Dartmoor National Parks Authority. The South Devon HG & PG Club has a license to fly only on designated sites for its members. Membership in the club and the BHPA with current third-party insurance is required. Dartmoor is a military training area and a designated danger area from ground level to 10,000 feet. Do not cross areas bounded by Range Marker Boards when red flags are flying. Do not pick up any unidentified objects. Keep a lookout for low-flying aircraft, particularly during the week. Always carry a map, compass, and water, and inform others of your intentions. Areas to Avoid: Certain areas are designated as National Nature Conservancy and other conservation areas. Avoid landing or crossing these areas on foot, except in true emergencies. Overflying is not a problem.
