This site, with an elevation of 480 meters, is occasionally used and offers good soaring conditions with potential for cross-country (XC) flights. Coordinates: Grid SX 553 890, Site ID: 871, Site Code: 02.097. Site Officer: John Owen-Jones. Suitable for both Hang Glider and Paraglider Club Pilots. Dimensions: - 400 ft to bottom landing - 700 ft back to parking area The site features an excellent north-facing bowl that is soarable in lighter winds. Rigging: There is plenty of sloping area to lay out your equipment. Take Off: The take-off area is good, but be cautious of the sunken paths that cut across the hill when handling and running. Top Landing: The top landing area is good, but watch out for rocks. Bottom Landing: The bottom landing area is large and flat. Hazards: - Army firing ranges behind the site - Steep gullies, rocks, and a reservoir - Power lines and sloping ground near the parking area - Avoid landing in Nature Conservancy areas; refer to 'Flying on Dartmoor' for more details Local Flying: The site offers excellent local flying conditions. XC Flying: There is excellent potential for cross-country flights. Directions: From the A30, leave at Sourton services interchange and take the A386 Tavistock road. The access to Prewley water treatment works is 300 meters south of the slip road, the second on the left. Walk in a south-easterly direction, avoiding bogs and wet ground. Maintain your height after leaving the wall and cross the valley near the top to reduce your climb around the rim of the bowl. The walk to take-off is approximately 1.5 miles. Parking: Park at the entrance to the water treatment works. Do not block the entrance road or the farmers' access to the moor. Take Off: The site features a large north-facing bowl. Landing: You can land on the slope, top landing, or anywhere on Dartmoor that isn't being used for live firing by the Royal Marines. Getting There: Take the A30 west from Exeter, then the A386 south from Sourton Cross. Turn left at the track signposted 'Granite Way'. Park and walk for a mile up the path to Corn Ridge. Comments: This is an easy site with good soaring and XC potential, also used for training on benign days. Flight Regulation: Be aware of Dartmoor Range Danger Areas to the south, which are active during live firing. Plymouth ATZ is further south.
