Chalton is an east-facing hill with a height of 115 meters and a horizontal distance of 45 meters. It is occasionally used for local soaring and features bumpy thermals and several trees. The site is open from February to September and closed from October to the end of January. There is no site fee, but you must text RJ Macaulay at 07503 733 557 with the number of people flying, as required by the farmer. The site overlooks a railway line and has restricted top and bottom landing areas, making it more suited to paragliders. It offers cross-country potential and is the most easterly paragliding site, providing the greatest distance before encountering airspace restrictions. The site is a short walk from limited roadside parking. Grid Reference: SU 734 151, Sheet 197 Height ASL: 144m (472ft) Top to Bottom: 250ft Wind Direction: 45 – 100 degrees, best at 90 degrees Pilot Grade: CP + 10 Access: From the A3, turn off at the signpost to Chalton. In the village center, park in the EHDC free car park just past the Red Lion pub. Cross the road and walk through the cemetery past the church. Follow the path until you reach a big field with three paths. Take the middle path over the field and through a gap in the hedge, leading to a kissing gate that accesses the top north end of the ridge. Walk along the hill until you clear the trees near the corner formed by two fences. This is the launch area. Parking: In the council car park just past the Red Lion pub. Take Off: From the front of the hill in front of the rigging area. Landing: The bottom landing field is available when not in crop. If in doubt, ask at the farm. Hazards: - Railway line immediately in front, forming the lower slope boundary. - Power lines to the south cutting across the hill. Rules: 1. A briefing from a pilot who has flown Chalton is advisable. 2. If the bottom landing is closed, the site is not suitable for hang-gliders. Paragliders must have a minimum of CP plus 10 hours. 3. The site is closed from October through January. 4. There is no site fee, but please text RJ Macaulay with the number of people flying each time. Consider: Pilots with less than CP plus 10 hours may find Whitewool or Mercury more suitable.
