    Cats Tor, located in the Goyt Valley area west of Buxton, England, is a regularly used paragliding site known for its soaring conditions. The site is best suited for winds coming from the west-northwest (WNW). It serves as a great alternative when Bradwell Edge is too rough. The site is open, with no currently reported issues. However, it is closed from May to June due to the presence of newborn lambs. Additionally, the alternative bottom landing by the car park is closed during April for bird nesting. Takeoff is at SK 994 759, at an elevation of 1640 feet (500 meters). There are two main landing options: Pym Chair at SJ 994 766, 1510 feet (460 meters), and by the car park at SJ 995 768, 1510 feet (460 meters). The airspace is under the Manchester CTA at 3000 feet QNH, so pilots need to be cautious about altitude restrictions. Cats Tor is a good soaring site in westerly winds, with the ridge extending south to Shining Tor, a site managed by the Peak Club. Top landing is possible but narrow, and landings must be made in front of the wall to avoid rotor. The site can become rough if the wind is too far south, and there is often turbulence at low levels between Cats Tor and Shining Tor. Pilots should be aware of the high wall at the base of the ridge and aim to land on the plateau below Pym Chair if descending. Parking is available in the car park north of the ridge, 150 yards along the road to Kettleshulme. If planning an XC flight, do not leave your car overnight without informing Buxton Police at 01298 72100. Access to Cats Tor is via a minor road from the Errwood Reservoir to the A5002, or from the A537 by a road passing the Lamaload Reservoir. From the car park, walk up to the highest point of the ridge as shown on the map. Do not take off from the low ridge close to the road, as it is owned by a different landowner. If landing below Pym Chair, walk to the exit and do not climb the fence by the road. If landing by the car park, exit via the gap in the fence in the corner of the car park or by the stile in the far right corner.
