Carn Brea is a challenging paragliding site with an altitude of 720 feet and a height difference of 300 feet from top to bottom. It is rarely used and primarily suited for thermal soaring with the possibility of small cross-country flights. The takeoff area is small and the terrain is rough and rocky, covered with gorse and ferns. The site is located near Redruth, with coordinates 50° 13′ 17″ N, 5° 14′ 46″ W. The wind direction suitable for this site is NNW-N. Both hang gliders and paragliders can use this site, but it is recommended for pilots who are members of the BHPA and have a pilot-level qualification. Access to the site can be tricky, and parking requires careful consideration to avoid obstructing landing areas. The nearest village is Carnkie, located 2 miles southwest of Redruth. From Carnkie, proceed west and look for the turning to the right signposted Carn Brea. Top landing at Carn Brea can be necessary, and the terrain is rough with hidden rocks and holes. Bottom landing is more straightforward, but the field is bordered by power lines, trees, and bushes, which may require a crosswind landing to avoid obstacles. The site can be turbulent in thermic conditions and does not ridge soar well. Hazards include gorse, large boulders, holes, and hidden stone walls. Slope landing is not recommended due to the risk of entangling risers in the gorse. Carn Brea is in a Military Low Flying Area, with a MATZ and Culdrose ATZ downwind. Pilots should check with Culdrose before attempting cross-country flights and be aware of good landing options behind the site, stopping when reaching the coast. For weather information, Dialmet services are available for RAF St. Mawgan and RNAS Culdrose. Pilots should also use the Military Freephone (0800 51 55 44) for midweek flying and check for Red Arrows, Royal Flights, and TRAs at 0500 35 48 02.
