Monte di Capaccio Vecchio Alto offers a unique paragliding experience with a takeoff height of 333 meters and a height difference of 310 meters. The site is rated as medium-easy and is rarely used, making it a hidden gem for those looking for a quieter spot. The walk to the takeoff point takes about an hour from the parking area, but the effort is rewarded with a beautiful launch meadow. Also known as Capaccio Montesano, this site features a gently sloping, short launch area. It is particularly favored when thermal conditions are weak and it is difficult to gain altitude from the lower Madonna launch site. The less steep slope makes it suitable for less experienced pilots. However, launching without wind can be challenging due to the limited space for a run-up or corrections. Top landing at this site is considered difficult. Directions: From SS 18 between Salerno and Acropoli, exit at Km 19.8 and take SS 166 towards Roccadaspiede. After a long left curve, continue on SS 166 (the landing area is to the right). Turn right towards Capaccio after a hairpin curve. Continue straight past the launch sites and around Madonna del Granato. A wide footpath to the right of the fountain leads to the launch site in about 20 minutes. For delta wings, a 4x4 road leads up just before the fountain, but a key is required (ask at the landing area). Meeting Point: There are two landing areas. One features a well-maintained lawn, a coffee bar, a playground, and a dammed stream for swimming, making it ideal for families. This is also the meeting point for carpooling to the mountain. The second landing area is behind a pizzeria and is very large. Access: From SS 18 between Salerno and Acropoli, exit at Km 19.8 and take SS 166 towards Roccadaspiede. After a long left curve, continue on SS 166 (the landing area is to the right). Turn left towards Madonna del Granato (a large orange church visible from below). The launch sites are just before and below the church. The Capaccio area is a true flying mecca, suitable for both beginners and experienced cross-country pilots. The region is highly rated year-round, but expect crowds on weekends. Local pilots are friendly and helpful, offering valuable insights into the area. Flying Conditions: Whether it's spring, summer, autumn, or winter, the updrafts rarely disappoint. Various launch options make it easier to get started. The "East Tour" takes you to "Soprano" and beyond, with enjoyable soaring along the ridge. Difficulty: Launch sites in the region are generally challenging, with limited space for a wing and little room for corrections or a run-up. Wind and good reverse launch technique are essential. Be mindful of the wind, which can increase rapidly, especially in spring. Typically, flights are conducted in the morning or after 5:00 PM when the wind subsides. The upper launch site is simple and suitable for forward launches. Reverse launches are recommended at all other sites. A new launch site is located to the right of the church on the new club grounds. Local pilots can provide guidance due to turbulence. Carlo is often present when conditions are flyable. The locals are very friendly, but some knowledge of Italian is helpful. Explore the region! In bad weather, consider a trip to Naples or relax in a thermal bath on the other side of the plain (location: Therme Contursi). Soaring Conditions: Always stay in front of the ridge. If the wind is too strong, Casa del Conte by the sea is a good alternative with typically less wind.
