Located in Scotland, UK, this paragliding site offers a launch altitude of 1350 feet with a height difference of approximately 900 feet. The site is known for its regularly used, nice soaring conditions and the possibility of mini cross-country (XC) flights. The region is managed by the Lanarkshire and Lothian Soaring Club (LLSC). Special rules include being aware of the intense gliding activity surrounding Portmoak airfield to the south. The site has a long history and is home to sailplanes operating from the nearby Scottish Gliding Centre at Portmoak. The site features a 4km long west-facing ridge, ideal for relaxed soaring, interesting ridge running, or challenging XC routes to the east. However, it is often busy with sailplanes. The Scottish Gliding Centre weather station provides useful weather updates. To get there, head for Kinnesswood north of Edinburgh. In the village, turn into Bruce Road and head for the primary school. Parking is available near the primary school on Bruce Road. Avoid parking too close to the foot of the hill or blocking the gate at the top of the road. The launch area is accessible by heading up Bruce Road, passing through a gate on the right, and following a well-worn track straight up the hill. Aim for a small band of crags and continue up to a level plateau for launch. If the wind has more of a northerly component, head north where the ridge starts to bend northwest. Top landing is relatively straightforward due to the large plateau extending back for several hundred meters. Bottom landing options include a sloping field near the substation at the bottom of the walk-up, though it is often thermic and not recommended for less experienced pilots. Always check the current farming activities as grass is a crop used for silage. For XC flights, be aware of various airfields, including Glenrothes and the MATZ at Leuchars. The Edinburgh CTR is located 7 miles south of the launch, and Glenrothes airfield is 4 miles southwest. Ensure you have up-to-date airspace data on your navigation device if planning to go XC. Weather hazards include the possibility of flying in light wave conditions, especially in a northwesterly wind direction, which can occasionally be turbulent. During winter, variable wind direction on landing can occur due to dense cold air compression around the Bishops.
