Battern Cliffs is a rarely used coastal soaring site with a height of 120 meters. It serves as a useful substitute for Struddick and Freathy during Autumn, Winter, and early Spring, and has potential for good cross-country flights in the Autumn. It also offers another launch point for Looe Runs when flags are up at Tregantle. The site is managed by the South Devon Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club. Coordinates: - Grid: SX 330 541 - Latitude: 50 21’ 46 - Longitude: 4 20’ 52 Directions: Take the coast road west from Crafthole (approximately 2 km) or east up from Downderry on the B3247. Parking: For paragliders, there is limited parking off the main road towards Crafthole (GPS 50 21’ 48; 4 20’ 39). Please do not block the gateway. Access is over the gate, directly into the take-off field. For hang gliders, use the track into the field off Tregunnus Lane (GPS 50 21’ 58; 4 21’ 08). Drive along the track with the hedge on your left and through the access gate into the main field. Unload gliders and park off the main field behind the hedge. Note that this access cannot be used when fields are in crop, typically from May until late August. Exercise extreme caution when driving back onto Tregunnus Lane due to poor visibility. Suitability: - Hang Gliders: Suitable for Pilot and Club Pilot with coastal experience. - Paragliders: Suitable for Pilot and Club Pilot with 20+ hours of coastal experience. Rigging: The rigging and de-rigging area is to the west of the access gate along the hedge behind the take-off area. Take Off: - Hang Gliders: The site accommodates a range of directions from SW to SSE from different parts of the field, as marked on the OS Map. - Paragliders: Mainly a S – SSW site. Top Landing: Easy top landing for both hang gliders and paragliders. Do not fly behind the hedge (north of the green dotted line on the map) when top landing, as landing in crops will result in losing access to the site. Slope Landing: There are no slope landing options due to the rapid drop-off of the cliff over the front fence, which is covered with scrub and bushes. Bottom Landing: This site is not suitable for bottom landing and can be very hazardous if the tide is in. In an emergency, you can attempt to land on the beach at the foot of the cliff, then carry out toward the western end (Bass Rock) and follow the path uphill onto Downderry road (B3247). Alternatively, with more height, head west onto Downderry Beach (hang glider option). Hazards: The primary hazard is the limited bottom landing options, making the site recommended only for experienced pilots. Top landing in strong winds could be hazardous due to rotor rolling off the high vertical cliff.
